Literacy*AmeriCorps sites vary from libraries and colleges, to multi-service day programs and county jails. Each site offers a literacy program promoting youth, adult or family literacy.

Job title: Education Coordinators
Overview of Position: 
The AmeriCorps member will provide ESL (English as a Second language) instruction to Latino immigrants; develop curriculum and materials for the program; perform student evaluations;  
recruit and manage volunteers for the organization; collaborate with community groups and organizations; organize class-based student field trips and activities and attend professional development trainings. Students served will vary in age and come from a variety of backgrounds from Latina America. Members will be provided with consistent support, independence to grow, space for innovation and new project ideas, and an overall respect and inclusion in the organization.

Qualifications
:

  • Bachelors degree or pertinent life experience equivalent
  • Bilingual Spanish and English verbal skills.
  • Excellent English written-language skills.
  • Ability to use PC hardware and software.
  • Understanding and demonstrated proficiency using the internet.
  • Culturally sensitive and aware.
  • Willingness to learn new ways of teaching

Essential functions:

  • Teach ESL Classes to Latino immigrants (8-10 hours per week)
  • Edit curriculum and/or develop curriculum for the program (10 hours per week)
  • Recruit and manage volunteers for the organization  (  8 hours per week)
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and weekly meetings with the site supervisor and fellow AmeriCorps member (4 – 6 hours per week)
  • Manage database and administer BEST test evaluation systems for student evaluations (3-5 hours per week)
  • Attend monthly Reflection meetings with Casa Latina staff (3 hours per month)
  • Attend professional development opportunities as necessary

Additional working Conditions/considerations:

  • Must be available to teach one evening per week and available to work early mornings
  • Must be comfortable working in a diverse environment.

Expected Site Service Schedule
Member will serve Monday 8:30 to 4:30, Tuesday 7:30 to 3:30, Wednesday 8:30 - 4:30;

Job title: AmeriCorps ESL Specialist (open position)

Overview of Position:

The AmeriCorps ESL Specialist at World Relief will serve refugees by teaching or assisting in multi-level ESL classes for clients in their first one to six months after arrival, and by recruiting and supporting ESL volunteers. The AmeriCorps member will serve refugees from many different ethnicities alongside an experienced ESL professional.

Qualifications:        

  • A desire to serve refugees in support of the overall mission and work of World Relief
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with people from diverse cultures and religious backgrounds
  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience desirable, especially in multi-cultural environments
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple duties
  • Flexibility, initiative, and a desire to learn
  • Experience working or volunteering with refugees and/or non-native English speakers very helpful
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Knowledge of a second language a plus

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with recruitment of ESL volunteers and assist in orientation, ongoing support and communication with classroom assistants (2 -4 hours per week)
  • Plan lessons and assist or teach multi-level ESL classes four times weekly to newly-arrived adult refugees  (14-16 hours a week)
  • Maintain and update student information in an organized and confidential manner, including, assessments, progress reviews, and attendance records (1-2 hours a week)
  • Assist in testing using standardized assessment tools. (1-4 hour per week)
  • Assist in developing multi-level curriculum and materials. (1-4 hours per week)
  • Attend monthly meetings for staff, ESL, employment and weekly resettlement meeting (1-5 hours per week)

POSITION FILLED * Job Title: AmeriCorps LEP Educational Assistant * POSITION FILLED

Overview of Position:

The AmeriCorps LEP Educational Assistant will serve recently arrived refugees by teaching or assisting in multi-level ESL classes four days a week (including pre-literate students), developing the computer literacy program, tutoring basic computer skills, training computer literacy tutors, and assisting with job preparation services. The AmeriCorps member will serve refugees from many different ethnicities alongside an experienced ESL professional and skilled Job Developers.

Job Title: ESL Instructor and Tutoring Assistant

Overview of position
:
Provide English instruction to two groups of approximately 10 adult, low-income refugees and/or immigrants each. Groups will take place in either Seattle or South King County. Work with program staff to organize groups, plan instruction, conduct intake and on-going support of students, and assess student learning. Assist in the recruitment, intake, matching and support of volunteer tutors and students.
Qualifications:

  • Must have some college experience
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to use PC hardware and software
  • Understanding and demonstrated proficiency using the internet
  • Ability to travel locally using own vehicle or public transportation

Essential functions:

  • Provide educational interviewing and goal setting for adult ESL students. (1 hour per week)
  • Administer pre-assessment to determine students’ ESL levels using CASAS standardized tests; and Administer CASAS post-tests after every 45 hours of instruction. (2 hours per week)
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans based on students’ goals and testing results. Organize field trips and guest speakers as appropriate, integrated into lessons. (15 hours per week)
  • Assist staff in recruiting volunteers through internet postings, staffing volunteer fairs, creating and posting fliers, outreach to corporations that promote volunteerism among employees, and promote word-of-mouth outreach. (2 hours per week)
  • Help with tutor intake, including interviews, background checks, reference calls, and registering for training; and provide on-going support to 10 tutors. (15 hours per week)
  • Maintain database and hard copy records on students and tutors who the AmeriCorps is teaching and supervising. (2 hours per week)
  • Attend monthly ESL Program staff meetings and individual meetings with the director. (1 hour per week)

Job Title: ABE/GED/ESL Instructor and Tutor, Volunteer Recruitment and Supervision


Overview of Position
: 
The members will provide ABE/GED/ESL instruction and tutoring to male and female inmates, recruit volunteer tutors, match tutors with student inmates, teach a service learning seminar at UW, recruit and process inmate requests for school and tutoring, fulfill requests for independent study materials, document student progress for monthly and quarterly reports.  They also provide offenders with access to community resources and information that aids in literacy development, employment, as well as community support upon release.
Qualifications:

  • Community College education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use PC hardware and software
  • Experience with at-risk or marginalized populations desirable
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience desirable
  • Foreign language is desirable

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare for, tutor/teach ABE/GED/ESL to inmates (16-18 hours per week)
  • Process inmate requests for school, materials, tutors, and independent study (10 hours per week)
  • Prepare and teach UW Pipeline seminar (2 hour per week)

Job title:
Workforce ESL and Basic Skills Program Assistant (position open)

Overview of Position
:
The Workforce ESL and Basic Skills Program Assistant coordinates tutoring and classes for adult learners from diverse backgrounds. In addition to volunteer recruitment and support, the member will develop curriculum, tutor and teach classes, recruit students, and monitor student progress.  Other projects include planning 3-4 Community Engagement Workshops or field trips focused on student transitions to career programs, college or employment as well as volunteer/student recognition events.

Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching or tutoring.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skill in handling interpersonal interactions with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage work effectively in a busy workplace. Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Preferred qualifications: A degree in education, social work, or a related field. Bilingual/bicultural.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruit, interview, train, and support volunteer instructors and tutors (5 hrs/week)
  • Coordinate and conduct new student orientation. (4 hrs/week)
  • Prepare for and teach Workforce ESL classes of 5-10 students two times weekly (6.5 hrs/week)
  • Plan for and provide one-to-one tutoring for an adult learner (5 hrs/week).
  • Implement 3-4 workshops on student transitions to career, college or employment programs (2 hrs/week)
  • Train volunteers for and co-coordinate 1-hour learning labs of 5-10 students 2-4 times a week. (2 hrs/week)
  • Manage caseload of 15-30 students, conducting intake interviews and on-going testing, working with students to establish a learning plan and schedule, and connecting students with learning opportunities to make progress in achieving their literacy and life skills goals. (8 hrs/week)

Overview of position:
The English Literacy & Civics Program Assistant coordinates citizenship classes and mock interviews, tutors, and teaches small groups of low income adult immigrants and refugees.  The member recruits and supports volunteers and students, develops curriculum, and monitors student progress.  Other projects include planning 3-4 Community Engagement Workshops or field trips focused on student transitions to career programs, college, or employment as well as volunteer/student recognition events.

Job title: James w. Ray Orion Center Education Program Instructors

Overview of Position:

The AmeriCorps members will provide basic literacy and numeracy skills, GED (General Education Development0,and COMPASS preparatory instruction youth aged 16-24. Many of the youth served are homeless or in unstable housing situations, half or more are tied to work training programs or case management offered through YouthCare’s James W. Ray Orion Center. Other duties will include: Developing learning outcomes with students, managing volunteers, creating curriculum, administering and evaluating assessments, and engaging in professional development activities. Members will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with staff doing a variety of jobs in our multi-service facility.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA + Teaching/tutoring experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated understanding of five core subjects – Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Microsoft Office Skills (Basic MS Word and Excel)
  • Experience working with young adults
  • Demonstrated ability work independently with good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent team member and collaboration skills

Job Title: ESL Tutor and Volunteer Coordinator

Overview of Position

The AmeriCorps member will gain a wide range of organization and teaching experience. They will have the opportunity to contribute to a population with extreme educational needs and social challenges. They will have the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world with incredibly rich diverse backgrounds and to experience their languages and cultures first hand. They will have an opportunity to make a tremendously positive impact on youth who have survived great hardships and extreme poverty and who potentially will be our future doctors, teachers and lawyers.
Beyond this incredible experience, the AmeriCorps will hone their organization and leadership skills as they learn to work within a complex organization, be both independent and interdependent to accomplish their many responsibilities. They will have a chance to mentor youth and develop instructional strategies for tutoring and teaching those skills to other potential tutors. They will receive extensive “hands-on” experiences in and out of the classrooms.  In so doing they will be challenged by day-to-day issues students bring and allow the AmeriCorps to put into practice the skills they have read and studied.  They will learn to support others, how to brainstorm in a team environment and how to problem solve day-to-day issues and challenges.

Overview of Position:
 
The AmeriCorps member will support The Seattle Public Library’s ESL Programs by nurturing and empowering refugee and immigrant adult learners in their quest to improve their English skills, to acculturate to live in the United States, and to prepare for employment. The member will coordinate the Talk Time program, and participate in additional organizational efforts to serve immigrants at a variety of library locations.  This is a volunteer-driven program, so a significant portion of the member’s work will be to provide support to and be supported by a group of 30-40 dedicated volunteers.

Qualifications
:

  • Experience working effectively with learners of different backgrounds, abilities, cultures and learning styles.
  • Comfort teaching or training adults.
  • Excellent program management skills.
  • Self-directed work style but comfort working in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and general computer skills.
  • Comfort with interviewing and managing volunteers.
  • Able to regularly travel throughout Seattle and to work frequent evenings and weekends.
  • Fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, or an East African language preferred but not required.

Job Title: Literacy*AmeriCorps Computer and ESL Instruction Coordinator

Overview of Position:
 
The AmeriCorps member will support The Seattle Public Library’s ESL and Literacy Programs by nurturing and empowering immigrants and other adult learners in their quest to improve their English, basic skills, and job readiness.  The member will coordinate the Adult ESL Computer Classes and Computers for English programs, and participate in additional organizational efforts to serve immigrants and adults with basic skills needs at a variety of library locations.  This is a volunteer-driven program, so a significant portion of the member’s work will be to provide support to and be supported by a group of 30-40 dedicated volunteers.

Job Title: AmeriCorps GED Instructor

Overview of Position:
 
The AmeriCorps member will provide GED classroom instruction to students 16-21 years of age from a variety of backgrounds, assist teachers in developing individualized curriculum, providing tutoring assistance in basic skills to credit retrieval students, develop and facilitate job readiness trainings and placement, and attend professional development trainings. Members will be given autonomy to grow and develop teaching/facilitation skills, while also receiving guidance from experienced instructors and staff.

Qualifications
:

  • Must be 18 years and older
  • Must have some college experience
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to use PC hardware and software
  • Understanding and demonstrated proficiency using the Internet
  • Able to work with and form relations with diverse student population
  • Able to creatively problem-solve and adjust to changing needs of high-risk students

Essential functions:

  • Teach GED preparation classes to students’ ages 16-21 years of age (10-12 hours per week)
  • Assist teachers in providing tutoring assistance in basic skills to credit retrieval students in a safe environment conducive to learning (10 hours per week)
  • Keep records of daily attendance, update GED curriculum as needed, and progression of assigned students (4-5 hours per week)
  • Coordinate scheduled test dates in collaboration with the designated testing center for students (3-4 hours per week)
  • Help recruit, provide direction and supervise volunteer tutors (4 hours per week)
  • Track volunteer hours based on YMCA policies (1-2 hours per week)
  • Provide one-on-one and small group instruction in basic computer skills and food handler’s card online certification (2-3 hours per week)

Overview of Position: 
The AmeriCorps member will provide ESL (English as a Second language), ABE (Adult Basic Education), and GED instruction to adults, recruit and support volunteers, recruit students through advertising in the community at large, plan, advertise, and facilitate weekly Talk Times, provide quarterly workshops based on student need, offer an open lab tutoring for students that are not yet registered with the community college, assist teachers in classrooms, track student progress, and support tutoring office through development of trainings and materials. 

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of an AA degree
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet use
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse setting
  • Proven record of organization

Essential functions:

  • Plan lessons for ABE, GED, ESL tutoring, Talk Time Times, and workshops (10 hours per week)

Overview of Position: 
This position is responsible for recruiting, assessing, supporting and instructing youth and adults preparing for the GED, providing ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction and other adult basic literacy. Instruction consists of multiple classes per week depending on the need; classes include up to 10 students.  This position also assists with H.E.A.R.T., a family literacy program based at Multi-Service Center’s Emergency Family Shelter.  This position will help recruit and support volunteer tutors by assisting them in developing lesson plans, coordinating classes, and student contact, as needed.

Qualifications
:

  • Interest and ability to work with diverse populations included but not limited to: limited English speakers, at-risk youth, low income, individuals with low level basic skills, etc.
  • Passion for working in social services is desired
  • Ability to work independently, accurately and efficiently, with an eye for detail

Adult students served will vary in age and come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Members will be given autonomy to grow and develop teaching skills, while also receiving guidance from their site supervisor.

  • Must have some presentation or teaching experience
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to follow driving directions

The instruction supports the needs of students who have a wide range of skill levels and barriers to success. The Instructional Assistant will utilize curriculum and strategies to help all students increase their basic skills to levels needed for GED attainment and for success in college or employment. This position will engage students in service-learning and work experience projects and internships. They will also help to expand the number of community sites and volunteer supervisors partnering in these projects.

Overview of Position
:
Literacy*AmeriCorps members help out-of –school  young adults, age 16-24, achieve their GED or high school diploma. Members tutor students in basic skills and/or GED subjects. AmeriCorps members may work in any one of the YouthSource learning tracks. The program includes a main academic classroom, focused on the transition to post secondary education and job readiness training, where students develop skills that will assist them in gaining and maintaining employment.
