Banned Books Art Pieces

Artists and writers both experience censorship. The Kirkland Library involved local artists in recognition of Banned Books Week last fall. Each artist was given a copy of a title that had been challenged or banned, each artist read the book, and then altered their copy so it could not be read by others.  Artists generously donated their pieces for this auction.

A Silly Cage by Cathy FieldsCathy Fields
Olive’s Ocean by Kevin Henkes

“It’s a shame for kids to miss a quality book because of someone’s over-reaction to a single kiss, or a well-warranted, angry word. Olive’s Ocean was such a sweet book, I could never figure out why it was banned. Reflecting on this, “A Silly Cage” holds Olive’s Ocean hostage behind crime scene tape that quotes the mystery of its banishment. Inside its cage, tidbits of imagery leak from the book, hinting at the richness lost to young readers.” www.cathiefields.com Value: $750

Art by Betty HagemanBetty Hageman
ttyl by Lauren Myracle

“As a teen, I’d visit local public libraries, reading books on all sorts of topics. I inspected each new idea. How did it feel? What was its logic? Its potential consequences? The more I read, the more I learned that there are many, many ways of believing and behaving, and that by becoming more aware of options I could make better decisions for myself. This artwork reflects the excitement, mystery and curiosity I felt as a teen when presented with a library full of ‘unapproved’ reading material containing ideas and activities from which I had been sheltered and shielded.” www.bettyhageman.com
 Value: $450

The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

“This story is about a teenager who struggles with her weight. She hates her images and wishes she were thin like the popular girls. Her romantic life is limited to lip locks with Froggy, a fellow outcast student. In direct violation of her own personal code of fat girls, Virginia makes a personal statement about her identity by wearing a tight purple dress to a family function. The book was banned for sexual reference. The ideas expressed were those by many women, young and old…to suppress them is retrogressive to any progress of women’s freedom.”
Value: $50

Jeny FilliusPerks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
“”I feel that this book is a good representation of what some teenagers go through at times. I also feel for that one youth, who feels bad and freakish occasionally, this book may offer some hope and give them some comfort that they are not alone. I found the story to be heartbreaking so I put a broken heart on the front. Then on the inside using two different metals I cut out Charlie as a silhouette so he’d look like a wallflower and blend in. On the opposite page  also in silhouette is Charlie and his aunt watching TV. I loved reading this book and transforming it into an art piece.” www.jennyfillius.com Value $50

And Tango Makes Three
by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell III
“I encased a book which was on the banned book list in mirrors, and then etched and painted the mirrors. The book is based on a zookeeper’s observations of penguin behavior. He observed two male penguins bonding and becoming a pair, and making desperate attempts to hatch a rock. The zookeeper gave the pair an egg to foster, and the hatchling was named ‘Tango’. It is natural for us to observe nature and to see ourselves in what we observe. Sometimes our observations challenge our beliefs about ourselves and antics ensue which range from ridiculous to murderous. I incorporated Copernicus’ sun-centered model of the solar system as a nod to the time-honored tradition of banning books and of rejecting nature when she disagrees with us. If we take an honest look at ourselves from time to time, even if we are caught off guard, should that really inspire fear?” www.psbowman.com  Value: $500
